Dresser turned TV/Media Stand

I will take you back a few months when I posted this Thomasville dresser that I found at the Salvation Army...it was half off day so the price was $65.  This is what it looked like then:

I fell in love instantly and knew that it would make a perfect TV/Media Stand for Kelli's new house.  This thing is huge...about 5 feet long and it weighs a ton!  They really knew how to build things back in the day.  Dovetail drawers and built solid.

Here is what it looks like now:

Now you can see why we lovingly call it the "Big Yellow Beast"!  Doesn't it look awesome against her darker gray accent wall (her other walls in the living room are a lighter gray, as seen here behind her "new" chair).  BTW, how do you like my photo staging...keep in mind she has not moved in yet and her TV is still sitting in my garage!

The color is Valspar's "Soft Duckling", which is one shade darker than her Chevron Wall.  We used the original hardware and repainted it with Rustoleum's Hammered Gray.  I used MDF for the shelves and added trim to finish it off.  The one mistake that I did make was drilling the holes in the back for cords...I should have made them smaller and lowered them...who knew that DVD players are now only about an inch thick.  Oh well, live and learn!

When you open the middle cupboard, this is what you see:

Just for fun, I made a vinyl stencil with my Silhouette and using the lighter yellow paint, added the numbers on the drawers.  A better view:

I think I can say this is my favorite re-do to date.  It makes me smile every time I look at it...of course that could be the bright, cheery color!

Let's take one more look at the before and after:

Whatcha' think...does it put a smile on your face too?!

Granite counter tops were put in today...appliances come on Saturday...things are finally coming together.  I have one more creation to share in the next few days...be sure to stop back by!

Till then...

We are interuppting the previous promised post...

...of the "Big Yellow Beast", do to equipment failure!  Only I could have a computer that is less than a year old (but I guess thankfully so I guess, since it is still under warranty!) but still have the hard drive crash!  Yep, the Geeks are trying, as we speak, to get me up and running again.  Of course my beautifully, already edited, pictures of the Beast are on there and nowhere else....arghhhhh!  I am typing this now on my laptop....I must be the only person on the planet that prefers their big ol' desktop to a laptop!  I'm sorry, but my fingers just always seem to be too big to fly across the keyboard of this thing!

Anyhoo, I will be going to Kelli's today to see her newly installed granite counter tops, so I will snap a few more pics of the Beast and post tomorrow...be sure and stop back by!!

Till then....

Sitting pretty!

Well, at least I think so!  You might remember a couple of weeks ago when I picked up this cute little chair at the Goodwill for $6.  It was very sturdy but had a few chips...kind of large chips, on the back and on the front.  Nothing a little wood putty couldn't cure.  Here is what the chair looked like when I picked it up:

The first thing I did was take it home and remove the seat cushion.  Recovering seat cushions is kind of my "thing"...it is quick (except for removing the old staples) and easy AND you get instant gratification after putting the fresh new fabric on!

Speaking of fabric, look at these fun home decor prints that I picked up from Amazon...the actual company that sells them is Fabric.com, so you can go directly to their site to pick of tons of choices.  This fabric is 54 inches wide and a nice thick twill...normally what you would pay about $20 a yard at big box stores!

Not sure if you can tell, but the chevron print is almost like a heavy linen...yummmm!  You are waiting for the price, right?  I'm going to tell you...one was $7.48 a yard and the other was $7.98...smokin' deal or what?!

This is what I found after removing the cushion from the chair and flipping it over:

Not only is it a Drexel...it is a very old Drexel.  I believe (and I could be wrong about this) that the 9 57 you see, is the date it was made.  Dang...this thing is OLD, almost as old as me!  No wonder it was so solid...you just can't beat the quality of old furniture.  And yes, that is the original fabric that I found underneath!

It is hard to tell from the original pic, but I did add more batting to "fluff" the seat up.  This is where I will tell you that I ALWAYS give my chairs the "smell" test!  If, after removing the fabric and actually giving the chair a good "sniff", I don't smell anything...I use the original stuffing.  I saturate spray it with Febreeze just for good measure, and let it dry completely. I know a lot of people would be hesitant to do this, but I just like the way that the original stuffing conforms to the wood!

I painted the chair with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint...Paris Grey and Pure White and finished it off with her clear wax.  How do you like me now?

Doesn't it look awesome on Kelli's new, beautiful floors and newly painted wall?!  If you can believe it, I never even held the ASCP up to her wall before painting the chair...the shade turned out perfect!

And just because I think you can never have too many pillows and even a cute chair deserves a little extra "bling", I whipped up this little accent pillow with fabric I purchased from Hob Lobs!

I have to say, I love how it turned out and fits Kelli's decor perfectly!

One more peek:

Be sure to check back in the next couple of days for the reveal of what we lovingly call "The Big Yellow Beast"!

Till then...

If you know me at all...

...you know that Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year!   Sure, I love Christmas too and it is a very close second, but there is nothing more fun than decorating and baking for Halloween!

These could possibly be the, if not one of, the cutest cookies I have seen yet!  Now, I wish I could take credit for the creative genius behind these designs, but I cannot...that honor goes to Lisa at The Bearfoot Baker!  When she posted them on her blog, I knew I had to give them a try!  I would change how I did things a little next time, but over all, I was quite pleased at how they turned out.

I mean seriously how cute are these little 3D spiders?!  Here is an even better look:

I was a little skeptical that I would be able to execute these, but Lisa was sweet enough to assure me that I could do it, and I don't think I did too bad for the first time!  All the pieces for the spider are "Royal Icing Transfers" that I made ahead of time and applied to the wet icing.  Next time I think I need to make my legs a little smaller and my heads a little bigger...his eyes practically consumed the whole face, but I still think they are pretty darn cute!

Thank you Lisa, for sharing your tutorial!

Till next time...happy baking!

Let there be "light"...

...again!  Things are finally starting to come together in Kelli's new house!

If you remember, this house was straight out of the 70's...literally!  The previous owner had done some updating in other parts of the house, but had never touched one thing in the kitchen...can you even imagine?!  From the hideous paneling to the VERY worn linoleum flooring, it stood exactly how it had been in the late 70's.  In Polly's defense, (you remember Polly, right?  I used some of her old cabinet doors to create these and these) she kept things immaculate.  She had some strange decorating ideas, but all in all the house was clean!

Anyhoo, when dismantling things to prepare for some kitchen "demo" we had to remove the light fixture in the eating area.  Our first thought was GARBAGE, but when I gave it a second look, the wheels started to turn.  Not so fast, after all Kelli is on somewhat of a budget...why not try and save that light and give it new life.  Here is a not so good picture of it sitting on my kitchen table (minus it's hurricane glass thingy's (which Polly was kind enough to replace a few before she left).

Does this thing scream 70's or what?!  I had already wrapped the beautiful wood piece in the middle in preparation for it's first coat of paint.  Kelli wanted it Brush Nickel...to go with another light fixture that I made (sorry, not hung yet...that is for a future reveal!)

You know me...I am always in too big of a hurry to take "in progress" pictures, so without further ado, here is how it looks now:

She chose Valspar's, Lime Twist as a fun accent color!  One more peek:

Whatcha' think?  Not bad for about $8 worth of paint!  We love it!

Now for a little "teaser".  Does this look familiar at all:

Stay tuned to see this reveal coming soon!  Can't wait to share this one too!

Till then...

Someone is having a baby...

...and although it is not someone I know personally (I am sure that I just freaked out a few family members with my blog title, lol), it is Misti and she was my cookie giveaway winner!  She decided that her other four children might enjoy baby cookies so that is the theme that she chose.  Since she does not know if it is a boy or a girl, I went completely "gender friendly"...you can never miss with yellow and green.

I am hoping that the cookies arrive in good condition...I tried a new shipping method, so we shall see!  Hope you and your family enjoy your cookies, Misti!  Congrats!

Just a reminder...there is still time to vote for Boxer Luv Rescue  in the Chase Community Giving contest...they could really use that grant!

Till next time...happy baking!

Please take one minute...

out of your busy day and help me out...I promise you will feel good that you did!

I am trying to help gather votes for a local rescue called Boxer Luv Rescue. It only takes a minute to vote.  Here is the link to Chase Community Giving, click on the "VOTE NOW" and when the "Search Box"  come up, enter Boxer Luv Rescue and vote.  Voila...you are done!  And if you want to take one more minute you can also vote using Facebook and they will receive extra credit votes.

This is a one time vote and all votes need to be in by Sept. 19th, so please don't wait!!  This is such a good cause, they rescue boxers daily, all around Arizona...they could really use a $25,000 grant!

Look at this face and tell me she isn't worth your time!

Thank you!!

On another note...what do you think of this cute little chair that I picked up for Kelli at Goodwill yesterday...who could pass up a $6 chair.  It may look a little worse for wear in this picture (yes, that is a a rather big "gotcha" in the front), but it is already redone in my mind, so stayed tuned!

Till next time!

It's "owl" about turning one!

Shauna contacted me about a month ago to order some cookies for her daughter, Brynnlee's (love that name), first birthday!  WHAT?!  Okay, where did that year go because it was just that long ago that I was making Shauna's baby shower cookies and it seems like last month!

She sent me a picture of the invite and knew that she wanted owls, but not sure what to go with.  I suggested something simple like circles with the number "1" and ovals with her name...those darn owls were so cute, I thought they should be the main attraction!  Here is a what the owl looked like on the invitation:

Stinkin' cute, huh?  This is what I came up with:

Whatcha' think...kind of cute?  They were so much fun to do...I don't know what it is about owls, but they are a real "hoot" to make!

They were individually packaged for favors.  I added the ribbon but Shauna was attaching a small tag...she was kind enough to send me this picture when they were all done:

How cute is that tag?  Love!  Thanks so much, Shauna...hope Brynnlee had a wonderful first birthday!!
